Pathways
The 4 Pathways of Goodwin University Magnet School System
At the heart of our pre-K to 12th-grade program is our intentional design that centers on using strategies to help our scholars discover who they are and develop their skills and knowledge in a logical progression towards adulthood. Our pre-K-5 program focuses on exposure to our pathways so that our youngest scholars can see themselves successfully in local careers while also having the freedom to experiment with different subjects. In grades 6-8, scholars are provided with many diverse opportunities to explore each pathway within the context of their core and special interest classes. In grades 9-12, we provide concrete experiences for scholars through our pathway specific courses.
Our pathways were created in alignment with the Governor's Workforce Council, which has been tasked with "has been tasked with setting strategy and policy for the state's Pre-K through retirement workforce pipeline." Our staff is made up of education and industry professionals who can best equip our scholars to have fruitful careers or pursue post-secondary education upon graduation.

Business & Administration
Scholars in the Business and Administration Pathway will explore the Connecticut State Personal Finance Competencies, and discover personal, national, and global financial planning. They will also develop proficiency in management, entrepreneurship, accounting, and business law & ethics and are awarded an 18-credit Business Startup Certificate by Goodwin University. Lastly, they will participate in one of our business-related work experiences, including several programs in partnership with Junior Achievement as well as our student-run store.
Computer Science
Scholars in the Computer Science Pathway will explore introductory concepts in coding and robotics, including developing programming skills in Python and Vex Robotics. They will later develop proficiency in in algorithms, the Internet, big data, digital privacy and security and the societal impacts of computing as well as programming in Scratch and Java. In addition, they will have the ability to earn industry-recognized Microsoft and/or CompTIA Certifications. Lastly, they will participate in our Computer Science work-based learning program, including several programs in partnership with Junior Achievement as well as various of job shadowing and internship opportunities.
Health Science & Nursing
Scholars in the Health Science and Nursing Pathway will explore medical ethics & terminology, measurement of vital signs, anatomy & physiology, infection prevention & control, standard precautions, and patient social-emotional care are explored. Lastly, scholars will apply, be accepted into, and participate in one of our work-based learning programs, including a Certified Nursing Assisting program consisting of 125 hours of classroom and clinical experiences in collaboration with a local long-term care facility, or a home health aide program consisting of helping local area citizens age in place.
Manufacturing & Engineering
Scholars in the Manufacturing and Engineering Pathway will develop proficiency in blueprint reading, manufacturing math, precision measurement, lean principles, Master CAM & CNC machining. They will also be awarded an Advanced Placement CNC Machining Certificate by Goodwin University, as well as a certificate from the Department of Labor that is recognized as equivalent to 200 hours towards an industry-level apprenticeship. Lastly, they will participate in our pre-apprenticeship program, doing paid work in local area manufacturing companies to gain invaluable experience in the industry.
Exposure at Riverside Magnet School
At Riverside Magnet School (pre-K-grade 5), scholars are exposed to a wide range of subjects in relation to the Pathways, and they are encouraged to engage in investigations and to ask questions about these and other subjects.
Exploration at CTRA Middle Level Program
Connecticut River Academy Middle Level (grades 6-8) offers a safe and welcoming environment where scholars apply critical thinking skills and utilize prior learning to further explore the district pathways. Through meaningful discovery and research, scholars are prepared to choose the right pathway for them as they transition to high school.
Experience at CTRA High School
Connecticut River Academy high school (grades 9-12) scholars in each pathway have the opportunity to take subject-specific courses leading to advanced or higher level college credits, industry-recognized certifications, and job-related work experiences. Scholars have access to dual enrollment and Advanced Placement courses, as well as state-of-the-art facilities and resources. Through an innovative curriculum and engaging teaching practices, scholars will get a jump start on their careers and begin building hard skills by participating in job shadowing, internships, and pre-apprenticeships.
